Zacks Initiates Coverage of NI Holdings With Neutral Recommendation
Read MoreHide Full Article
Zacks Investment Research has recently initiated coverage of NI Holdings, Inc. (NODK - Free Report) with a Neutral recommendation. The insurer’s improving underwriting results and stronger capital position are encouraging, although premium contraction and geographic concentration warrant a measured view.
Headquartered in Fargo, ND, NI Holdings provides property and casualty insurance through businesses spanning private passenger auto, homeowners, farmowners, crop insurance and commercial-related coverage. Its operations are entirely U.S.-based, with North Dakota representing its most important market.
A key tailwind is the sharp improvement in underwriting profitability during the first half of 2026. NI Holdings generated an underwriting gain of $6.2 million compared with a $14.6 million loss a year earlier, while the combined ratio improved to 94.8% from 110.3%. This progress helped net income swing to $12.7 million from a $5.6 million loss, with annualized return on average equity rising to 10.3% from negative 4.6%.
Another favorable development is the continued runoff of the loss-making Non-Standard Auto business, as highlighted by the research report. Following the company’s decision to stop writing this business in Illinois, Arizona and South Dakota, first-half premiums in the segment dropped sharply. More importantly, the drag on earnings has diminished significantly. The segment posted a $1.5 million underwriting gain in the second quarter of 2026 compared with an $8.8 million loss a year earlier, while the first-half underwriting loss narrowed to just $0.08 million from $13.4 million. As remaining policies continue to run off, NI Holdings should face less exposure to a business that had been a major source of volatility.
Growth in stronger core businesses is also helping reshape the earnings mix. Home and Farm net premiums earned rose 15.1% in the first half of 2026, supported by higher renewal premiums, new business and rate increases in North Dakota. All Other premiums increased 55.1%, driven mainly by participation in catastrophe reinsurance programs. Private Passenger Auto, Crop and All Other remained underwriting-profitable during the first half of 2026. NI Holdings also ended June quarter with $376.5 million in cash and investments and $249.4 million of shareholders’ equity, while ongoing share repurchases provide another source of capital support.
However, several risks temper the outlook, as outlined in the report. Net premiums earned fell 14.5% year over year in the first half of 2026 as the Non-Standard Auto runoff reduced the premium base. Catastrophe and weather-related losses remain important sources of earnings volatility, particularly given the company’s sizable Home and Farm and crop exposure.
Geographic concentration is another concern. North Dakota accounted for roughly 71% of direct premiums written in the first half of 2026, leaving results particularly sensitive to severe weather and regional insurance conditions. Investment income has also declined, while operating cash flow turned negative during the period despite the improvement in reported earnings.
NI Holdings’ shares have shown mixed performance as improving underwriting trends are weighed against concerns over growth and earnings volatility. The stock trades at a relatively modest valuation compared with industry peers.
Despite premium contraction, geographic concentration and weaker cash-flow trends, NI Holdings benefits from improving underwriting profitability, a healthier business mix and solid financial flexibility. For more detailed insights and analysis, read the full Zacks Investment Research report on NODK.
Note: Our initiation of coverage on NI Holdings, which has a modest market capitalization of $305.3 million, aims to equip investors with the information needed to make informed decisions in this promising but inherently risky segment of the market.
